Today is the test day for the JLPT N3. That is the middle level of 5 (N5 easiest, N1 hardest).
It's not a short test:
30 mins Vocab
70 mins Grammar/Reading
40 mins Listening
with 30 minute breaks between.
I plan on taking one shot at N3, and then if/when I try again it will be N2. That's regardless of passing/failing. I'm just using the JLPT as a gauge of my Japanese improvement and to guide my studies (on the test? Study it. Not? Skip it for now.) rather than for actual certification. So I want to keep challenging higher if the test material is at least within my grasp, and forcing myself to fill in the blanks as I go. Tomorrow I start adding N2 level vocabulary and materials (well, more N2 level materials) to my flash cards and reading this.
It's just a pain in the butt to take the test - once a year, on the first Sunday in December, in NYC, four hours long, etc. Nothing convenient about it. I'd love to find a good, reliable, online test I could take for Japanese just to gauge my skills against a rigorous standard. Until they, all I have is the official test so I'll keep at them.
Either way, here is hoping I pass! I've got my #2 pencils, eraser, non-beeping watch, and all the other accoutrements of standardized testing.*
* I just want to point out that my athletic training professional certs are all online (open book but hard) or are given at local test centers on demands, with instant results. No shock, education testing lags everything.

JLPT N4 Results
I checked my JLPT N4 results yesterday online.
I passed.
The scoring is hard to explain. The Pass/Fail numbers are here.
N4 scores you from 0-180, with 0-120 in written, 0-60 in listening. You must score 90+ points to pass, with a minimum of 38 from written and 19 in listening. Miss any of those three - 90+ total, 38 in written, 19 in listening - and you fail. One of my friends failed N2 by a couple of points despite getting an outstanding listening score, because of missing a minimum on one of the three sections of that test.
My scores were:
Written: 85/120
Listening: 38/60
Total: 123/180
Vocabulary: A
Grammar: A
Listening: A
A is 67% or more of the answers in that section were correct, clearly independent of points since I didn't get 67% of the points on listening.
Overall, I'm happy. I didn't do as badly as it felt on 12/1. But it's clear I need more work, and I'm glad I've been studying every day for N3.

Practice 1/12 - JLPT N3 Practice Test Results
Today I did the N3 Practice test. All together I spent about 3 1/2 hours studying and testing today.
My scores:
Vocabulary/Kanji - 8/33, or 24%
Grammar/Reading - 20/39, or 51%
Listening - 24/27, or 89%
- I'm disappointed in my reading and vocabulary scores. My problems hearing the difference between long and short vowel sounds means I often know the kanji, know the meaning, know the usage, but have to guess between 3 or 4 choices because I'm not sure which if any have long sounds.
- I couldn't concentrate anymore after the first 31 of the grammar section. The reading just became a blur and I got almost every one in that section wrong.
- I was disappointed because my best reading skill is picking out cost, due dates, time, and features from advertisements and お知らせ - notices. But I got one of those two wrong because I just didn't read closely because I was so happy to be almost finished.
- I did better on the sentence construction section.
- I almost skipped the listening but I knew I wouldn't want to do it tomorrow, so I did it anyway.
As much as I want to study what I got wrong, my plan is to just set the test aside and not check the answers, and start my new textbook. Once I'm all finished and I re-take the test in a few months, I may start to dig into those specific errors.
From tomorrow I will start this book:

12/1 JLPT N4
昨日、JLPT N4という試験を受けた。その試験の受けたことがないので、N5の練習のテストは簡単過ぎたのでN4にやって見た。
でも、昨日はちょっと大変。知らないことはいっぱいと知ってるかないかことが多かった。文保と単語はちょっと難しいけどもし全部分からないことは「バツ」だったら、パースを出来たと思う。
リスニングは普通に俺には簡単だけど、昨日のリスニングテストは大変だった。難しかった。色々な分からない言葉を作ったら、いろいろな知らないことの問題があったら、難しかった。普通は、俺は２８から１～２個わからない。昨日は、２８から６以上分からなかった。ルーマーは、２８から１９以上正しくてパースを出来る。おれは多分ぎりぎり出来た～多分ね。
２月までN4は出来るかないかのことに待てなければならない。多分前にインターネットで分かるけど、そのすることはまだ分からない。
今度の試験は来年の１２月１日だ。そのとき、N3を受け見る。N4はまで分からないことも勉強するけど、N4はもう一回やりたくない。
